A recent study reveals that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals buying such medications should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle support.
